Program Overview

The CALTCM Leadership and Management in Geriatrics (LMG) course is a highly regarded, interactive program praised by participants for its practical content, expert speakers, and immediate impact on clinical practice, communication, and leadership development.

Investment in Leadership = Investment in Performance

Professionals in post-acute and long-term care organizations face increasing regulatory pressure, workforce challenges, financial constraints, and rising expectations for quality and outcomes. Sustainable success depends on developing leaders who can navigate complexity, drive performance, and inspire teams.

The LMG course is a comprehensive leadership development program designed to prepare emerging leaders. LMG builds the skills necessary to lead change, strengthen operations, reduce risk, and improve patient/resident outcomes—while supporting succession planning and workforce stability.

Strong leaders consistently demonstrate better team cohesion, clearer communication, and greater operational stability. LMG prepares emerging and current leaders across to:

  • Improve interdisciplinary communication, collaboration, and team performance.
  • Navigate conflict productively and support a healthy workplace culture.
  • Lead teams through change, complexity, and competing demands.

LMG is tailored to the realities of skilled nursing and long-term care, with case-based learning and practical application designed to produce measurable impact. Join us June 12-13, 2026 at the Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, CA. Investing in your leadership capacity today strengthens performance and stability tomorrow. We look forward to seeing you!

Target Audience: Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals who work in clinical and academic settings related to geriatric care.

  3. Enhance collaborative problem-solving skills by applying strategies/approaches to effectively engage teams in the spirit of effective issue resolution.

  5. Create and implement an action plan to address a relevant leadership or management issue.

History
In 2000, the California State-funded Academic Geriatric Resource Program awarded a grant to the California Geriatric Education Center to develop and implement a conference on management and leadership skills for health professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses in the discipline of geriatrics. The Planning Committee, under the leadership of Dan Osterweil, MD, FACP, created the Geriatric Services Management Training (GSMT), which was presented in October 2002. GSMT was later renamed Leadership and Management in Geriatrics (LMG). Since that time, we have trained 490 health professionals, keeping the enrollment small in order to maintain a high level of faculty/participant interaction. In 2016, LMG found a new home with CALTCM!

Testimonials

"Our fellows completed terrific quality improvement projects through LMG.
Sending our fellows to LMG was an easy way to meet this ACGME requirement."
Nancy Weintraub, MD
Director, VA/UCLA Geriatric Medicine Fellowship
"This conference more than exceeded my expectations. The pearls I took home could make a necklace, and I am now reviewing my own clinical programs and strategic business development with a fresh viewpoint. It was the Business 101 Course for Medical Practitioners that I never got in medical school. I would highly recommend this conference for anyone focusing on a geriatric practice, whether a fellow or in private practice."
Christine M. Mlot, MD, CMD
CMO and Co-founder of GeriNet Medical Associates
"Prior to attending the March conference, our team was on track to have a $200,000 deficit by October 2008. Thanks to the guidance received during and after the conference, we ended FY 2008 exactly on budget. Our team is now much better positioned to plan for future program development, and we have significantly advanced our visibility and credibility with the medical center."
Janet Groth, MSN, BSN
