CALTCM, in partnership with UCLA and SCAN Health Plan, is proud to present the 14th Annual Leadership & Management in Geriatrics conference to be held April 1-2, 2016 at the Hilton Long Beach & Executive Meeting Center. This two-day conference affords participants – including physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals who work in clinical and academic settings related to geriatric care – the opportunity to spend time in an intensive and highly interactive setting with leaders in the field of geriatric medical management. Participants are encouraged to think "outside of the box" and consider novel approaches to creating and managing geriatric clinics, practices, and services.
A unique feature of the conference is the opportunity for participants to work in small collaborative groups with a faculty mentor to develop and implement an action plan for a worksite-specific quality improvement management/leadership challenge. CME and CE units are available to all participants, and additional credits are awarded to those who complete their quality improvement project post-course.

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
  • Identify unique characteristics of geriatric health care services
  • Describe and apply key elements of business/organizational theory to medical practice
  • Apply geriatric leadership and management skills to medical practice
  • Describe at least three models for geriatric practice
  • Apply collaborative problem solving skills
  • Apply mentor/mentee skills
  • Create and implement an action plan to address a worksite management/leadership issue.
Registration for the April 1-2, 2016 course is open!

History of LMG

In 2000, the California State-funded Academic Geriatric Resource Program awarded a grant to the California Geriatric Education Center to develop and implement a conference on management and leadership skills for health professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses in the discipline of geriatrics. The Planning Committee, under the leadership of Dan Osterweil, MD, CMD, created the Geriatric Services Management Training (GSMT), which was presented in October 2002. GSMT was later renamed Leadership and Management in Geriatrics (LMG). Since that time, we have trained more than 150 health professionals, keeping the enrollment small in order to maintain a high level if faculty/participant interaction. SCAN Health Plan has provided sponsorship for LMG since 2006.  Now LMG has found a new home with CALTCM!

Testimonials

"Our fellows completed terrific quality improvement projects through LMG. Sending our fellows to LMG was an easy way to meet this ACGME requirement."
Nancy Weintraub, MD
Director, VA/UCLA Geriatric Medicine Fellowship
"This conference more than exceeded my expectations. The pearls I took home could make a necklace, and I am now reviewing my own clinical programs and strategic business development with a fresh viewpoint. It was the Business 101 Course for Medical Practitioners that I never got in medical school. I would highly recommend this conference for anyone focusing on a geriatric practice, whether a fellow or in private practice."
Christine M. Mlot, MD, CMD
CMO and Co-founder of GeriNet Medical Associates
"Prior to attending the March conference, our team was on track to have a $200,000 deficit by October 2008. Thanks to the guidance received during and after the conference, we ended FY 2008 exactly on budget. Our team is now much better positioned to plan for future program development, and we have significantly advanced our visibility and credibility with the medical center."
Janet Groth, MSN, BSN
