A Time for Blessing

by Timothy Gieseke, MD, CMD

Dickens described the paradox of giving and receiving so well in the character of Ebenezer Scrooge as Ebenezer sought life and joy in pursuit of great wealth at the expense of everyone else.  The paradox is that he received the greatest wealth and joy when he was transformed from a hoarder to a giver.

In my own life I have found this particularly true in medicine, which has become so business-oriented with a “survival” mode mentality rather than being patient-friendly.  As I have progressively moved into the world of geriatrics, I have been encouraged by the focus on patient-friendly, competent care and the collaborative team approach that shares expertise, innovation, and kindness.

As a senior clinician, I have greatly benefited from my time of giving and receiving with CALTCM, AMDA, and CCCC.  The resultant expertise and passion has improved my effectiveness as a Medical Director and a clinician. This is further affirmed when a patient, family member, or staff addresses me as “Doc”, a family term of endearment and trust.

I have now been on the BOD at CALTCM for many years and am now serving as your treasurer.  Behind the scenes, many good innovations for blessing are in the works.  For us to advance these innovations, we need your help.  Many years ago at our annual CALCTM meeting, Dr. Chris Mlot challenged us to consider how we could give back to CALTCM to advance its work.  For me that was the start of a rewarding partnership.

As we close out this year and look to 2017, please consider giving your time, expertise and yes, money. On the surface, this sounds crazy, but like Scrooge and others, come, bless, and be blessed.

At CALTCM, we want you to know that all year-end donations are greatly appreciated.

This truly is the season for giving.
