CALTCM:  Brief background of your training, practice setting and how many years you have been in practice.

Dr. Mlot:  I completed an Internship In Internal Medicine, then traveled around the world and had a medical practice in Kathmandu Nepal and India for 7 years.  I returned to southern  California where I worked for FHP, and met Kim Phan MBA.  Together we founded GeriNet Medical Associates in 1996 , a medical group that provides post acute care and hospice care  in Southern California and Nevada, and now an affiliate of Health Essentials.  I am a fulltime clinician in San Diego where I round in 25 nursing facilities and work with our amazing Nurse Practitioners.

CALTCM: What are you passionate about in post-acute/ long term care?  How are you pursuing your passion?

Dr. Mlot: I am passionate about end of life care, hospice,  appropriate care and use of medical services that are aligned  with individual patient goals and raising the bar for compassionate, appropriate care for all residents and patients in long term care.  I am passionate about teaching and training other healthcare professionals who work with problematic patients, the homeless, the frail elderly, disabled and mentally ill populations we serve in long term care.

CALTCM: What advice would you give to a new graduate contemplating a career in long-term care?

Dr. Mlot:  Ask questions of everyone you meet and work with, and then learn to listen to the answers- ask your colleagues, your nurses, your Nurse Practitioners and Physicians Assistants, and most of all the patients under your care.  Be ever learning and don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know”.

CALTCM: What additional training do you wish you had that may help with your current practice?

Dr. Mlot:  I wish I had gotten feedback earlier in my career about how I affect others and how to focus on the worker and not so much the work.

CALTCM: How has CALTCM impacted your practice?

Dr. Mlot: CALTCM inspires me and it’s a privilege to be associated with such amazing and accomplished leaders in our specialty.  CALTCM pushes me to stay engaged in the many issues that affect how we care for our patients and helps me be a better doctor.
