Congratulations to David Farrell, Winner of CALTCM Leadership Award 2014

At the CALTCM Annual Meeting in Los Angeles earlier this month, we honored David Farrell, M.S.W., L.N.H.A., for his substantial contributions to long-term care.  Mr. Farrell is a licensed nursing home administrator who has spent his entire career in the long-term care profession. Like a number of CALTCM leaders, Mr. Farrell started as a CNA in order to earn extra money while attending college. That experience inspired him to pursue a Master’s degree in Social Work with a concentration in Gerontology and Administration from Boston College.

In the 25 years he has served as a California nursing home administrator and regional director of operations, David has advocated for person-centered care and culture change using quality improvement practices. A published author and member of the Board of Directors at the Pioneer Network, his award-winning book, “Meeting the Leadership Challenge in LTC: What You Do Matters!” co-authored with Barbara Frank and Cathie Brady, has received widespread acclaim.

Currently, David is the Senior Director of The Green House Project where he helps spread the Green House Model across the U.S., and he shared some of the successes of this model to CALTCM attendees.  Most attendees felt that if they ever needed to be in a nursing home, they would appreciate being in a Green House type home!

CALTCM is grateful to Dr. Chris Mlot and GeriNet for their generous donation which funded the Leadership Award for 2014 which includes a $1,000 gift.
