Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Better assess, manage and monitor pain in long-term care settings using various assessment tools and MDS 3.0.
  • Improve their understanding of a range of medication and non-pharmacologic management options, including risks, adverse effects, benefits and alternatives.
  • Assess and manage common sleep problems in the institutionalized elderly through use of pharmacological/behavioral approaches.
  • Recognize top CDPH cited resident-care deficiencies, take steps to improve facility compliance, and prevent adverse survey findings.
  • Better assess decisional capacity, address and document non-adherence and care for "unbefriended" patients in the context of risk management.
  • Implement and evaluate practical goals and approaches to improving quality of care through Advancing Excellence/QAPI.
  • Understand the major focus areas of elder abuse lawsuits in LTC settings, as well as MICRA and EADACPA, common clinical scenarios that lead to litigation, and recent changes in local law enforcement reporting requirements.
  • Deliver live testimony, use documentation to reflect quality of care, give a deposition or testify under oath, and understand common legal arguments in nursing home negligence cases.
